Kemijärvi, Finland’s northernmost town, is located in the eastern part of the province of Lapland, mainly north of the Arctic Circle. The city centre is surrounded by the magnificent waters of Lake Kemijärvi, Lake Pöyliöjärvi, and Finland’s largest river, the Kemijoki, as well as dozens of dune valleys, which give the city a spacious appearance.

Location of Kemijärvi

As the main station of the eastern railway line is located in Kemijärvi, you can easily reach us by night train from Helsinki, for example. Rovaniemi airport is only an hour’s drive away, and Ruka and Kuusamo are less than two hours away. More information can be found on our Transport links page.

Our town is a versatile centre of services, culture and sporting opportunities: a spa and swimming pool, a cultural centre, a music academy, a sports and ice hockey hall, 200 km of snowmobile trails and 80 km of marked water trails. There are five popular mountain resorts (Suomu, Pyhä, Luosto, Salla and Ruka) and three national parks (Pyhä-Luosto, Salla and Riisitunturi National Parks).
